  • Description

MORE THAN 20,000 PEOPLE BELONGING TO THE KIKUYU TRIBE ATTENDED A RALLY ORGANISED BY THE KENYA AFRICAN NATIONAL UNION AT LIMURU (ABOUT 25 MILES FROM NAIROBI) AUG. 27. FOR HOURS, THEY SANG AND DANCED WHILE WAITING FOR THE SPEAKERS TO ARRIVE - THESE INCLUDED THE KANU PRESIDENT, JAMES GICHURU; SECRETARY-GENERAL TOM MBOYA; AND THE TREASURER, OGINGA ODINGA.

MAIN THEME OF THE SPEECHES WAS THAT JOMO KENYATTA, FORMER MAU MAU MANAGER, HAD BEEN FREED FROM RESTRICTION LARGELY DUE TO THE EFFORTS OF KANU. SPEAKERS SAID IT WAS ESSENTIAL THAT KENYA SHOULD NOT DETERIORATE INTO A "SECOND CONGO", BUT SHOULD "GO FORWARD AND CREATE AN EXAMPLE FOR THE REST OF AFRICA". NO POLICE WERE ON DUTY, AND THE CROWD WAS KEPT IN ORDER BY MEMBERS OF THE KANU YOUTH WING.

A NOTABLE ABSENTEE - KENYATTA HIMSELF. HE HAS STATED THAT HE DOES NOT WANT TO BE IDENTIFIED WITH EITHER KANU OR THE OTHER BIG PARTY, THE KENYA AFRICAN DEMOCRATIC UNION. PICTURES OF HIM WERE SOLD, HOWEVER, BY A PARTY MEMBER TO RAISE FUNDS FOR "EDUCATIONAL PURPOSES".
