  • Description

Adebayo Adedeji, the newly appointed Executive Secretary General of the UN's Economic Commission for Africa (ECA), arrived at Addis Ababa's Bole Airport or Tuesday (3 June) to officially take up his post.

Mr. Adedeji was met by officials of the ECA, representatives of the Organisation of African Unity (OAU) and members of foreign diplomatic corps.

Captain Assefa Asfaw, chief of protocol in the Ethiopian Ministry of Foreign Affairs, was also on hand to greet the new ECA chief.

Mr. Adedeji told a news conference that he had no policy statement to make at this stage, but that he hoped he could continue the good work of his predecessor, Dr. Robert Gardiner.

Mr. Adedji who has been commissioner for Economic Development and Reconstruction in the Federal Government of Nigeria, is by no means a new figure in the international civil service system.

He has served in a advisory capacity in many different inter-governmental agencies.
