  • Description

LONDON POLICE TONIGHT (SUNDAY) CLASHED WITH DEMONSTRATORS PROTESTING AGAINST UNITED STATES ACTION IN VIETNAM. IN A MELEE OUTSIDE THE AMERICAN EMBASSY, 27 ARRESTS WERE MADE.

ABOUT 3000 PEOPLE TOOK PART IN THE DEMONSTRATION, WHICH WAS ORGANISED BY THE LONDON BRANCH OF THE BRITISH COMMUNIST PARTY. THEY MASSED IN TRAFALGAR SQUARE TO PROTEST AGAINST LAST WEEK'S BOMBING BY THE AMERICANS OF OIL DUMPS IN HANOI AND HAIPHONG.

A RESOLUTION WAS PASSED CONDEMNING THE BOMBING AS "A BARBAROUS AND PROVOCATIVE ACT, INCREASING THE DANGER OF A THIRD WORLD WAR." IT CALLED FOR A HALT IN THE RAIDS AND A COMPLETE AMERICAN WITHDRAWAL FROM VIETNAM.

THE DEMONSTRATORS, SHOUTING ANTI-AMERICAN SLOGANS, THEN MARCHED TO THE U.S. EMBASSY IN GROSVENOR SQUARE. THEY PRESENTED A PETITION DEMANDING THE AMERICAN WITHDRAWAL SO THAT "PEACE AND INDEPENDENCE IN VIETNAM CAN BE REALISED." THEY ALSO SENT A MESSAGE TO THE PEOPLE OF HANOI EXPRESSING THEIR "HORROR AND INDIGNATION" AT THE BOMBING RAIDS.

AS THE DEMONSTRATION BROKE UP, SCUFFLES BROKE OUT. POLICE, WHO HAD BEEN STANDING BY, MOVED IN AND MADE 27 ARRESTS.
