    In Iran, troops returned to the streets of the capital, Teheran, in strength on Tuesday (12 December 1978) to re-establish military control after two days of massive anti-Shah demonstrations. But as the situation in Teheran grew calmer, reports from Isfahan indicated that serious clashes were taking places that southern city. Elsewhere in Moslem world there have been demonstrations in support of Iran's anti-Shah movement.

    SYNOPSIS: In Beirut there was a march in support of Iran's disdents, while the demonstrations in Teheran were at the height on Sunday (10 December). The march was organised by the Committee for Solidarity with the People of Iran -- a group founded specially for the occasion.

    Demonstrators carried pictured of exiled religious leader, Ayatollah Khomeiny who has become a symbol of anti-Shah feeling in the Moslem world. Lebanese religious leaders joined the march and it is estimated that three thousand Shi'ite Moslems turned up to express their disapproval of the Shah's policies.

    Sunday was the anniversary of the death of Hussein, grandson of the prophet Mohammed, who died in 680 AD fighting against the oppression of the Caliph Yazid. he of Moslems and, for the anti-Shah faction, he symbolises their own struggle against the Shah -- whom they regard as the modern version of the caliph.

    The Lebanese marchers voiced the same demands as those in Iran: that the Pahlavi dynasty must go, that there must be an Islamic government after a general election and that only Khomeiny speaks for the Persian people.
