SYNOPSIS: Malaysia celebrated the 14th anniversary of its independence with a big parade through the streets of Kuala Lumpur on Tuesday. Taking part were soldiers, workers, children, and a cross-section of the Chinese, Indians, and Malays who make up the multi-racial nation.

The theme of the parade was 'national unity', which Prime Minister Tun Abdul Razak said Malaysia must work towards. In an independence day message to the nation, he referred to the racial riots which split the country in May, 1969, and said it must never happen again. The Federation of Malaya was created under British protection in 1948, and became independent in August 1957 -- 14 years ago. The name was changed to Malaysia in 1963, to take in other states in the areas.
