  • Description

A Council of Ministers meeting of the Organisation of African Unity (OAU) started in Addis Ababa on Monday, (23 February) with an Angolan deputation taking its seat for the first time.

The delegation represents the Angolan People's Republic which was formed by the Popular Movement for the Liberation of Angola(MPLA).

Shortly after the delegation took its seat, its leader, the Angolan Foreign Minister Mr. Jose Edouardo Dos Santos, strongly criticised its neighbour and fellow OAU member, Zaire, over its role in the Angolan civil war.

Zaire supported the National Front for the Liberation of Angola (FNLA) in the civil war.

The council of ministers meeting was officially opened by the Ethiopian head of state, Brigadier General Teferi Bante.

In his opening address, the General said the independence of Angola heightened prospects for the independence of Zimbabwe (Rhodesia) and Namibia (South West Africa).

He said colonialism in both these territories was confronted with the crucial choice of either accepting the inevitable or facing intensification of the armed struggle.

The conference, besides electing new officers of the organisation's ministerial council, discussed co-operation between Arab and African states.
