  • Description

ABIDJAN, CAPITAL OF THE IVORY COAST, HAS DEVELOPED A REPUTATION AS THE "PARIS OF AFRICA". MODERN, WELL-PLANNED, AND BUILT ON AN ISLAND WITHIN A LAGGON, ABIDJAN IS ONE OF THE BURGEONING CAPITALS OF THE CONTINENT.

ABIDJAN DATES FROM 1903, WHEN IT WAS MADE THE TERMINUS OF A RAILROAD PENETRATING THE DENSE COASTAL FOREST.

IT HAS A POPULATION OF SOME 300,000 AND WIDE, DUAL-CARRIAGEWAY ROADS. NEW HIGH RISE BUILDINGS, AND ITS ISLAND LOCATION, GIVE IT A SLIGHTLY "MANHATTAN" APPEARANCE.

THE LATEST ADDITION TO THE SKYLINE IS THE NEW SHELL BUILDING, ON AVENUE CHARDY. IT HAS OFFICES, RESIDENTIAL APARTMENTS, AND SEVERAL EMBASSIES, INCLUDING THE BRITISH EMBASSY.

IN 1936 ABIDJAN WAS A SLEEPY TROPICAL TOWN OF 10,000. AFTER THE SECOND WORLD WAR IT HAD NOT GROWN MUCH BIGGER, BUT NOW A SOUND ECONOMY BASED ON COFFEE. COCOA, TIMBER AND TROPICAL FRUIT HAVE ATTRACTED WIDE FOREIGN INVESTMENT.

IT IS WIDELY REGARDED AS THE FASTEST MOVING CITY IN AFRICA, BUT IS ALSO RECOGNISED AS THE MOST EXPENSIVE IN THE CONTINENT.
