  • Description

Talks aimed at drawing a Cyprus ceasefire line began in Nicosia on Friday (August 2) amid reports that Turkish forces continued to advance west of the northern part of Kyrenia. The reports said the Turks passed through the villages of Lapithos and Karayas and pushed on along the coastal road from Kyrenia to Nicosia.

The ceasefire implementation talks were held by Greece, Britain and the United Nations representatives. Maps drawn up by the International organisation peacekeeping force were studied. The meeting lasted four hours. It looks like being a long slow process. An official statement after the discussions said there was an exchange of views and areas of difference which would be dealt with at future meetings.

The ceasefire line was called for by the United Nations Security Council which authorised U.N. forces to move into a buffer zone between the Turkish army and the Cyprus National Guard. U.N. soldiers will also patrol villages with mixed Greek and Turkish populations.
