  • Description

A NEW TRADE LINK BETWEEN WEST AFRICA AND THE FAR EAST OPENED LAST WEEK WHEN THE WORLD'S LARGEST ORE CARRIER, THE 80,000 TON NORWEGIAN OWNED INAYAMA, ARRIVED AT MATOLA, IN MOZAMBIQUE, TO LOAD IRON FOR JAPAN. IT WAS THE BEGINNING OF A MAJOR EXPORT OPERATION WHICH WILL RESULT IN MILLION OF TONS OF ORE BEING SHIPPED TO JAPAN THROUGH MOZAMBIQUE OVER THE NEXT TEN YEARS.

BUILDING OF THE TERMINAL AT MATOLA, WHICH IS NOT FAR FROM LOURENCO MARQUES, INVOLVED A MAJOR ENGINEERING OPERATION. THE CHANNELS INTO THE SMALL PORT HAD TO BE ENLARGED TO HANDLE THE HUGE ORE CARRIERS. THE RAIL LINK FROM MOZAMBIQUE TO SWAZILAND HAD TO BE COMPLETED AND, THE MECHANICAL LOADER HAD TO BE BUILT.

THE LOADER HAS A CAPACITY OF 5 MILLION TONS OF ORE ANNUALLY. THE ORE IS DUMPED AT THE RAIL HEAD AND THEN TAKEN BY THREE RECLAIMERS TO CONVEYOR BELTS WHICH CARRY THE ORE UNDERGROUND TO THE LOADING WHARF. THERE, IT'S ELEVATED TO A BRIDGE AND CARRIED BY A DOUBLE BELT SYSTEM DIRECTLY INTO THE HOLDS OF WAITING SHIPS.

THE INAYAMA WAS BUILT SPECIFICALLY FOR THIS TRADE AND SHE'LL BE JOINED EVENTUALLY BY TWO SISTER SHIPS AT PRESENT BEING BUILT IN JAPAN. THE LOADER WILL BE ABLE TO FILL THE HOLDS OF THE BULK CARRIERS IN 48 HOURS OF NON-STOP OPERATION.

MOST OF THE IRON ORE LEAVING FOR JAPAN THROUGH MATOLA WILL COME FROM SOUTH AFRICA, WITH SWAZILAND AND RHODESIA SUPPLYING SMALLER BUT SUBSTANTIAL TOTALS. WHEN THE THREE SHIPS ARE OPERATING AT FULL CAPACITY A SHIP WILL CALL AND LOAD AT MATOLA EVERY TEN DAYS.
