  • Description

SHEETS OF FLAMING PETROL FLOWED THROUGH A CANAL IN THE SMALL ITALIAN VILLAGE OF RIVANAZZO EARLY THIS MORNING, CREATING HAVOC AND PANIC AMONG THE TOWN'S THREE THOUSAND INHABITANTS.

ONE PERSON WAS KILLED AND SEVERAL INJURED WHEN THE BURNING FUEL CAUSED UNDERGROUND GAS PIPES TO EXPLODE, SHATTERING HOUSES AND SHAKING BUILDINGS.

THE PETROL, ESTIMATED AT 2-MILLION LITRES (439-THOUSAND GALLONS) GUSHED OUT OF A NEARBY ARMY FUEL DEPOT AFTER STORAGE TANKS WERE STRUCK BY LIGHTNING DURING A STORM. A SECOND LIGHTNING FLASH IS BELIEVED TO HAVE IGNITED THE PETROL AS IT FLOWED THROUGH A MEDIAEVAL CANAL RUNNING THROUGH THE CENTRE OF THE VILLAGE.

POLICE SAID AN EVEN GREATER DISASTER WAS AVERTED WHEN A WORKMAN TURNED OFF THE VILLAGE GAS SUPPLY AFTER HEARING THE UNDERGROUND GAS PIPES EXPLODE.

FIREMEN SPREAD ACRES OF FOAM ON THE THICK PETROL IN THE RIVER STAFFORA PASSING THROUGH THE VILLAGE. BUT LATE YESTERDAY THEY WARNED THAT THE HUGE AMOUNT OF PETROL STILL AROUND THE VILLAGE COULD EASILY IGNITE AGAIN.
