TRANSCRIPT: REPORTER (SEQ 7) "Barry, Saturday's your first competitive race since your last accident. How do you feel about it?"
SHEENE: "I'm looking forward to it. I've, I haven't until this afternoon, I won't have ridden a motorbike for sort of eight months apart from a little bit of practice in England. so, I'm looking forward to it, really."
REPORTER: "What makes you go on. why don't you give up?"
SHEENE: "I think the only reason is that I enjoy it. I started racing because I enjoyed it and I enjoy it now. And I think it's pretty silly to give up - if I was to give up racing now then sort of at the end of the year I'd think Ah, I really miss racing I'd like to do another year which is silly. You know I could never understand Nikki, you know, Nikki Lauda giving up 'cos he hated it or whatever it was and then he comes lack into racing again 'cos he obviously missed it."
REPORTER: "There's not a lot of your own body left; how many more accidents can you have, how many more can you survive?"
SHEENE: "I really don't know. You know the way to look at it is what's going to happen is going to happen; the accident at Silverstone wasn't my fault. I crashed in America in 1975 at 180 miles per hour, that wasn't my fault, the tire exploded. Um. I enjoy racing and you know, what can you do? If you say this might happen or that might happen. If you're that paranoid about what might happen in life you'd never go on a DC-10 because the engines fall off of them, you'd never do this, that or the other, you know."

    Background: KYALAMI, SOUTH AFRICA

Former world motor cycling champion Barry Sheene will make his comeback to racing on March 19, when he competes in the South African 500 cc Grand Prix, the first event of the 1983 world championship series. Sheene has been out of action since July 28 last year when leg injuries from a high-speed crash at Silverstone, in England, threatened to cripple him. The thirty-two-year-old cyclist broke both legs and a surgeon at the time said it looked as though his bones had exploded. But within days of the accident, London-born Sheene vowed he would race again. This week he clocked fourth fastest time during 25 laps of unofficial practice, watched closely by his girl;friend, model Stephanie McLean. Riding a production Suzuki Barry Sheene said later everything had gone perfectly; the bike was going well and his legs had given him no problems. His time topped that of reigning Grand Prix champion, Italy's Franco Uncini who clocked one minute 31.5 compared with Sheene's one minute 30.8 seconds. Several former world champions and other top riders will be taking part in the 500 cc series, including Uncini's team mate, Randy Mamola. Sheene is treating his comeback to racing as the natural continuation of his career. He told reporters he raced because he enjoyed it and he could see no reason for stopping. both of his serious accidents, at Silverstone last year and in North America in 1975 were not caused by him, he said.
