  • Description

HONGKONG SAW WHAT IS PROBABLY THE WORLD'S MOST EXPENSIVE SMOKE ON MONDAY (FEB 6) AS MORE THAN FIVE TONS OF OPIUM, HEROIN AND MORPHINE WERE BURNED IN A REFUSE INCINERATOR.

THE DRUGS, SEIZED BY THE AUTHORITIES OVER THE PAST THREE YEARS, HAD AN ESTIMATED RETAIL MARKET VALUE OF 57 MILLION HONGKONG DOLLARS (ABOUT GBP3 1/2 MILLION STERLING).

POLICE ARMED WITH SUB-MACHINE GUNS AND CARBINES SURROUNDED THE NEW KENNEDY TOWN INCINERATOR AND PREVENTED PEOPLE, EXCEPT PRESSMEN AND GOVERNMENT OFFICIALS FROM GETTING NEAR THE SACKS OF DRUGS.

THEY WERE THROWN INTO THE FLAMES AS A GOVERNMENT SPOKESMAN REMARKED: "IT IS APPROPRIATE THAT WE SHOULD BE TREATING THESE DANGEROUS DRUGS, ENOUGH TO RUIN THOUSANDS OF PEOPLE, AS REFUSE -- SOMETHING TO BE GOT RID OF."
PART OF THE DRUGS CAME FROM A THREE-TON HAUL ON A CHICKEN FARM IN THE NEW TERRITORIES IN 1964.

THERE ARE MORE THAN 600,000 ADDICTS IN THE BRITISH COLONY.
