    MR. JOSIAH GONDO, WHO WAS SUCCEEDED AS LEADER OF THE PARTY, ALSO CHALLENGED MR. SMITH OR ALLOW ALL LITERATE RHODESIANS TO TAKE PART IN ANY REFERENDUM ON WHETHER RHODESIA SHOULD BECOME A REPUBLIC.

    HE WAS DEFEATED FOR THE PARTY'S LEADERSHIP BY MR. PERCY MKUDU, A 50-YEARS-OLD BUSINESSMAN. VOTING WAS 58-26. MR. MKUDU, WHO WAS BORN IN RHODESIA, ATTENDED SCHOOL IN JOHANNESBURG WHERE HE OBTAINED A DIPLOMA IN SOCIAL SCIENCE. AFTER RETURNING TO RHODESIA IN 1959 HE WORKED AS A WELFARE OFFICER BEFORE BEING ELECTED TO THE LEGISLATIVE ASSEMBLY IN 1962.
