  • Description

Tanzania, Kenya and Uganda are to become associates of the European Common Market. An agreement between the European Community and the East African states is to come into effect on January the 1st.

The instruments of ratification will be exchanged at Arusha, in Northern Tanzania, on Monday, December the 21st.

Arusha, is headquarters of the East African Community formed by the three countries. It is rapidly growing in importance in East Africa. And, it is expected to become a major African tourist centre.

An international airport is being built near the town and within sight of Mt. Kilimanjaro. It's runways will be long enough to take "JUMBO" jet aircraft. Tourists will fly direct from Europe and America. They will be taken 40 miles to Arusha, and from there they will visit the famous wildlife areas of Northern Tanzania. New hotels are being built in the town to cope with the expected influx of tourists. The airport is expected to be operational by the end of next year.

Arusha is also becoming increasingly important as a manufacturing centre. Among industries established there are a brewery, canned food factory, engineering works and a plastic factory.

The Arusha area is famous for its coffee. Experts consider the crop among the best in the world. The neatly-laid-out coffee estates start just outside the town itself. Modern production methods are used and the estates are prosperous. Coffee is one of the products the European Community will import from East African Community. Up to 56,000 metric tons of unroasted coffee a year will be imported free of duty.

The East African Community minister for Common Market Affairs, Mr. R.J. Ouko, said that the object of the agreement was to increase trade between the two Communities.
