  • Description

TODAY (FRIDAY), WAS COMMISSIONING DAY AT MONS OFFICER CADET SCHOOL, ALDERSHOT, IN SOUTHERN ENGLAND -- AND AS USUAL THERE WAS A HIGH PROPORTION OF FOREIGN CADETS AMONG THOSE WHO PASSED OUT AS OFFICERS. OUT OF 75 CADETS COMMISSIONED, 22 CAME FROM FOREIGN AND COMMONWEALTH ARMIES INCLUDING TANGANYIKA, KENYA, NIGERIA, AND JAMAICA.

THE PARADE WAS TAKEN BY LIEUTENANT-GENERAL SIR JOHN HACKETT, DEPUTY-CHIEF OF THE IMPERIAL GENERAL STAFF. AFTER THE MARCH PAST IN SLOW AND QUICK TIME, THE GENERAL PRESENTED THE SENIOR UNDER OFFICER -- T.E. MACDOWEL -- WITH THE SILVER-MOUNTED BATON.

AS COMMISSIONED OFFICERS, AFTER A SHORT SPELL OF LEAVE, THEY WILL BE JOINING THEIR UNITS -- IN MANY CASES REPLACING BRITISH OFFICERS, WHO ARE AT PRESENT SERVING WITH THOSE UNITS.

(AND IN DAR-ES-SALAAM TODAY, THE CONFERENCE OF THE ORGANISATION FOR AFRICAN UNITY APPROVED TANGANYIKA'S PROPOSALS TO REPLACE BRITISH TROOPS IN THE COUNTRY WITH AFRICAN FORCES.)
