  • Description

SWIFT ACTION BY AMERICAN SAILORS SAVED A FASHIONABLE RIVIERA BEACH FROM SERIOUS OIL POLLUTION TONIGHT. THE BEACH WAS THREATENED BY 12,000 LITRES (ABOUT 2,600 GALLONS) OF BLACK OIL, ACCIDENTALLY DISCHARGED FROM THE AIRCRAFT CARRIER SHANGRI LA LYING AT ANCHOR OFF CANNES.

A SAILOR ON BOARD THE CARRIER WAS ORDERED TO EMPTY THE WATER TANKS - AND BY MISTAKE, HE EMPTIED AN OIL TANK INSTEAD. WITHIN HOURS EVERY WAVE WASHING, ONE OF THE WORLD'S MOST EXPENSIVE BEACHES LEFT BEHIND A LAYER OF STICKY, BLACK OIL ON ROCKS AND SAND.

MORE THAN 250 AMERICAN SAILORS WORKED ALL NIGHT UNDER ARC-LIGHTS DIGGING TRENCHES TO PREVENT THE OIL SPREADING FURTHER UP THE BEACH. THEY ALSO SPREAD A COAGULANT SUBSTANCE WHICH MAKES OIL SINK TO THE SEABED. MUCH OF THE AFFECTED SAND WAS CARTED AWAY FROM THE BEACH AND PLANS WERE MADE TO SHIP HIGH QUALITY SAND FROM NAPLES TO THE CANNES BEACH.

AT ONE TIME, MORE THAN FOUR MILES (SIX KILOMETRES) OF BEACH WERE THREATENED AND LOCAL OFFICIALS AND TRADERS FEARED THE STRETCH WOULD BE UNUSABLE FOR WEEKS. THIS WOULD HAVE MEANT DISASTER FOR CANNES, WHERE OFFICIALS ARE ALREADY WORRIED ABOUT THE POLLUTION FROM SHIP BOARD RUBBISH FROM VISITING U.S. SHIPS.

BUT AFTER THE DAY AND NIGHT MOPPING UP EFFORT, THE DANGER WAS REPORTED TO BE OVER - AND ONE SHAME-FACED AMERICAN SAILOR WAS LEFT TO EXPLAIN TO HIS SHIPMATES HOW IT ALL HAPPENED.
