  • Description

The Greek Supreme Court met in Athens on Thursday (9 August) to hear appeals seeking to annual the results of July's referendum to abolish the monarchy because of alleged voting irregularities.

Meeting in plenary session, the court examined 11 appeals, including one by the committee for the restoration of Democratic Legality in Greece, set up by the Opposition political parties.

The appeals claimed that there'd been irregularities both before and during the voting in the Referendum, which was held on the 29th of July. One of the complaints before the court was that many voters were issued only with 'yes' ballot tickets. Lawyers told the court that in some polling stations, people had been forced to vote in public, which violated the laws which safeguarded the secrecy of voting.

According to Greek laws, the Supreme Court should issue its verdict by August 14 or 15.
