Background: Queen Elizabeth's only daughter, Princess Anne, slipped into soldier's denim overalls in West Germany on Tuesday (March 26) and drove a 7 ton Scorpion light tank along forest tracks.

The bumpy 11 minute drive at speeds up to 50 miles an hour was on a visit to the British Army 14/20 King's Hussars at Herford, West Germany. Princess Anne is the regiment's Colonel-in-Chief.

It was the Princess' first official engagement since last Wednesday's (March 20) harrowing kidnap attempt and shooting near Buckingham Palace.

She wore the insignia of a full Colonel and a breast pockat label identifying her as: "The Princess Anne" on her overalls.

After the driver her instructor Sergeant Major Jim Boyle was full of praise for her performance.

"She is a fantastic driver. She handled the tank like a horse", he said. But although Princess Anne, who was not accompanied by her husband captain Mark Phillips, showed no outward signs of tensing after last week's attack, she was followed by six military policemen armed with sub machine guns everywhere she went.

And during a mock tank "battle" no guns were fired to spare her nerves. The light hearted scenario for the tank "battle" gave one squadron the task of bringing a miniature replica of a sliver chamber pot safely through the enemy lines and presenting it to Princess Anne. The original silver chamber pot once belonged to Joseph Bonaparte, King of Spain and brother of the French Emperor Napoleon. It was captured by the Hussars at the battle of vittoria in 1813.

On Wednesday (27 March) Princess Anne was due to visit the regimental stables and open an Army school before flying home.
