Background: THE GOVERNOR OF SARAWAK, SIR ALEXANDER WADDELL LADY WADDELL HAVE BEEN TOURING THE REMOTE BARAM RIVER OF SARAWAK, HOME OF THE WARLIKE KENYAH AND KAYAN PEOPLES.

HIS VISIT SYMBOLIZED THE END OF AN ERA - IT WILL BE THE LAST MEETING BETWEEN THE BARAM RIVER PEOPLE AND A COLONIAL GOVERNOR BEFORE SARAWAK BECOMES PART OF MALAYSIA IN AUGUST THIS YEAR.

THERE ARE ABOUT 17,000 KAYANS AND KENYAHS LIVING IN THE BARAM VALLEY. THEY BUILD THE FINEST LONG HOUSES IN BORNEO AND ARE REPUTED TO BE THE BEST DANCERS.

THERE HAVE BEEN CLOSE RELATIONS BETWEEN THE BARAM PEOPLES AND THEIR COLONIAL RULERS SINCE SARAWAK WAS CEDED BY THE RAJAH BROOKE AT THE END OF WORLD WAR TWO. THE KENYAH WERE AMONG THE FIRST INDIGENOUS PEOPLE IN BORNEO TO LINK UP WITH THE BRITISH AND AUSTRALIAN GUERILLAS PARACHUTED INTO BORNEO IN 1945.

LAST DECEMBER, THEY FORMED IRREGULAR FORCES TO BLOCK OFF ALL ESCAPE ROUTES TOWARDS THE INDONESIAN BORDER DURING THE BRUNEI REBELLION AND THEY CAPTURED MANY REBELS.

SINCE THE WAR, THEY HAVE ADVANCED CONSIDERABLY IN THEIR STANDARD OF LIVING, HAVE SENT THEIR CHILDREN TO SCHOOL AND ADOPTED NEW METHODS OF AGRICULTURE. MANY OF THEM HAVE BEEN CONVERTED TO ROMAN CATHOLICISM.

THE HIGHLIGHT OF THE GOVERNOR'S TOUR WAS THE VISIT TO LONG LAMA, THE LONGHOUSE OF THE PARAMOUNT CHIEF OF THE KANYAHS AND KAYANS, TEMENGGONG OYONG LAWAI JAU.
