  • Description

THE COOK ISLANDS - 15 SURF-SPLASHES SOUTH PACIFIC ISLES - ARE FACING PROBLEMS OF DEPOPULATION AND ECONOMY WHICH MAY FORCE THEM TO TURN TO THE TOURIST MARKET FOR A SOLUTION. JUST CROSSING THE THRESHOLD OF SELF-GOVERNMENT, THE "PARADISE ISLANDS" ARE ALMOST TOTALLY RELIANT UPON SELF-SUPPORT FROM LOCAL PRODUCTS LIKE COPRA, BANANAS AND ORANGES.

NEW CALEDONIA AND AITUTAKI ARE BUT TWO OF THESE BEAUTIFUL AND UNSPOILED ISLANDS WHICH RETAIN THEIR TRADITIONAL CHARM. BUT THEIR REMOTENESS - AS WELL AS BEING AN ATTRACTION - IS AN ECONOMIC HAZARD.

A RECENT NEW ZEALAND CALIBRATION FLIGHT OVER THE COOK ISLANDS PROVIDED THE OPPORTUNITY TO SHOOT THIS FILM. APART FROM THE REGULAR CALLS OF THE CALIBRATION AIRCRAFT, THE ISLANDS RELY SOLELY ON TRADING BOATS TO IMPORT AND EXPORT PRODUCTS.

DISCUSSIONS HAVE RECENTLY TAKEN PLACE ON THE POSSIBILITY OF DEVELOPING THE AIRPORTS AT AITUTAKI AND RARATONGA, THE MAJOR ISLAND OF THE GROUP. BUT THERE IS OPPOSITION TO ANY LARGE-SCALE DEVELOPMENT OF THE TOURIST INDUSTRY ON THE GROUNDS THAT THE ISLANDS WOULD LOSE THEIR TRADITIONAL POLYNESIAN ATMOSPHERE.

AS PART OF THE LATEST EFFORT TO IMPROVE THE ECONOMY, AND TO TRY AND HALT THE FLOW OF YOUNG PEOPLE TO NEW ZEALAND AND AUSTRALIA, PRIME MINISTER ALBERT HENRY TOOK PART IN TALKS WITH FIJI, TONGA AND WESTERN SAMOA ON THE PROSPECT OF FORMING A PACIFIC ISLAND COMMON MARKET.

ALTHOUGH THE ISLANDS PRESERVE THEIR LEGENDARY IDENTITY WITH SUN, SEA, SAND AND SHAPELY POLYNESIAN MAIDENS, PROGRESS IS TO BE SEEN IN THE MATERIAL SHAPE OF NEW HOUSING WHICH IS NOW REPLACING THE ORIGINAL NATIVE HUTS.

AITUTAKI, ONE OF THE SOUTHERN VOLCANIC ISLANDS, HAS THE SECOND LARGEST POPULATION AMONG THE COOK ISLANDS. THERE ARE 2,900 INHABITANTS AND ONE OF THEIR MAIN CLAIMS TO FAME IS THAT OF HAVING THE BETS DANCERS IN THE SOUTHERN PACIFIC. AITUTAKI DANCE TEAMS HAVE TAKEN FIRST PRIZE AT TAHITI'S BASTILLE DAY CELEBRATIONS FOR MANY YEARS.

THE NEW ZEALAND GOVERNMENT - UNTIL RECENTLY RESPONSIBLE FOR THE ADMINISTRATION OF THE ISLANDS - IS REVIEWING WHAT HELP IT MAY BE ABLE TO PROVIDE TO ASSIST THE ECONOMY OF THE COOK ISLANDS FEDERATION.
