    100,000 SOCIALIST AND LABOUR UNION DEMONSTRATORS GATHERED IN TOKYO YESTERDAY (TUESDAY) TO PROTEST AGAINST THE RATIFICATION OF THE JAPAN-KOREAN NORMALISATION TREATY AND AGAINST WHAT THEY CALLED AMERICAN "AGGRESSION" IN SOUTH VIETNAM.

    MORE THAN 5,000 STEEL-HELMETED RIOT POLICE STOOD BY TO KEEP THE DEMONSTRATORS IN ORDER. THERE WERE NO INCIDENTS. THE DEMONSTRATION, ORGANISED BY THE JAPANESE SOCIALIST PARTY AND THE GENERAL COUNCIL OF JAPANESE TRADE UNIONS WAS HELD ON THE FIFTH ANNIVERSARY OF THE ASSASSINATION OF INEJIRO ASANUMA, A FORMER SECRETARY-GENERAL OF THE JAPANESE SOCIALIST PARTY. BEFORE THE SPEECHES, A ONE MINUTE SILENCE WAS OBSERVED IN HIS MEMORY. HIS WIDOW, MRS ASANUMA, WEARING A BLACK KIMONO, APPEALED TO DEMONSTRATORS TO FORCE THE GOVERNMENT TO CANCEL THE RATIFICATION OF THE TREATY AND TO BAN "US AGGRESSION IN SOUTH VIETNAM.

    THE DEMONSTRATION WAS FOLLOWED BY A PARADE THROUGH THE STREETS OF TOKYO.
