  • Description

President Salvadore Allende of Chile -- the world's first and only democratically-elected Marxist leader -- has received a peace medal for his 'efforts towards world peace'. The award, the 'Frederic Joliot-Curie Peace Medal', was presented to him in the Chilean capital of Santiago on Wednesday night (October 4) at the opening session of the World Council for Peace. The conference was being attended by some 160 delegates from 70 nations.

Receiving the award, President Allende said the fight for peace was not a one-man fight, but belonged to 'all people'. He also attacked 'imperialism', saying this assailed people from economic, political and cultural points of view.
