  • Description

The last United States troops withdraw by air from the multi-million-dollar base at Danang, South Vietnam, on Wednesday (March 28) -- accompanied by coffins of South Vietnamese dead for burial in Saigon, the country's capital. The withdrawal was part of the departure of U.S. troops from South Vietnam, which was completed the following day (Thursday, March 29).

The only U.S. troops left in South Vietnam were now either on the multi-nation Joint Military Commission supervising the ceasefire; guarding the U.S. Embassy in Saigon; or on a 14-men team searching for missing americans.

SYNOPSIS: The last United States troops withdraw from the multi-million-dollar base at Danang on Wednesday -- the second last day of America's final withdrawal from Vietnam. Some of their South Vietnamese girl-friends were there to say farewell.

With them on the aircraft were come coffins of South Vietnamese dead, bound for Saigon, the country's capital, where they were to be buried. They had been killed in fighting with communist troops at Hue, in battles continuing in violation of the ceasefire.

By the end of the day, one of day mixed with sorrow, the massive military base was empty. Twenty-four hours later, all the U.S. bases throughout Vietnam were similarly deserted -- following a decade of direct American involvement in the twenty-year-old war.
