  • Description

THE 1968 NOBEL PEACE PRIZE HAS BEEN AWARDED TO 81-YEAR-OLD PROFESSOR RENE CASSIN, PRESIDENT OF THE INTERNATIONAL COURT OF HUMAN RIGHTS IN STRASBOURG. BORN OF JEWISH PARENTAGE IN BAYONNE, SOUTH WEST FRANCE, THE SIMPLE AND UNPRETENTIOUS M. CASSIN BROKE INTO A DELIGHTED SMILE AND REPLIED "ALREADY?" WHEN TOLD OF HIS AWARD TODAY (WEDNESDAY).

THE PROFESSOR SAID AT HIS 18TH CENTURY FLAT OVERLOOKING THE SEINE ON THE ILE ST. LOUIS TODAY: "I AM VERY HAPPY. IT IS NOT GIVEN TO EVERY MAN TO HAVE THE LUCK TO LEARN LAW, TO TEACH IT, TO MAKE IT AS A JUDGE AND PROMOTE IT INTERNATIONALLY AS AN INTERNATIONAL JUDGE". BUT HE ADDED: "I WOULD BE HAPPIER IF THERE WERE A LITTLE MORE JUSTICE IN THE WORLD."
DESPITE HIS AGE, PROFESSOR CASSIN STILL KEEPS UP A HEAVY WORK SCHEDULE BETWEEN HIS VARIOUS JOBS INCLUDING HONORARY PRESIDENT OF THE FRENCH COUNCIL OF STATE, THE INSTITUTE OF INTERNATIONAL RELATIONS AND THE ISRAELI UNIVERSAL ALLIANCE. PROFESSOR CASSIN HAS DIVIDED MOST OF HIS LONG PUBLIC CAREER BETWEEN CHAMPIONING INDIVIDUAL RIGHTS AND HARMONISING INTERNATIONAL RELATIONS.
