  • Description

A gas explosion demolished a four-storey building at Skovlunde near Copenhagen, in Denmark, on Sunday (December 2). One man was killed and at least ten people were injured, some seriously.

The gas -- leaking from a fitting in the cellar, exploded at about eleven o'clock in the morning. Most of the people living in the building were at home because of Sunday driving restrictions.

They called the local council when they smelt the gas, and maintenance men had just finished inspecting the building next door for the leak when the gas exploded.

Rescue workers from the Fire Brigade, Civil Defence and the Police spent hours digging through the brick and stone rubble for the buried survivors.

SYNOPSIS: Firemen, civil defence workers and police from the town of Skovlunde worked for hours to dig the survivors out of the rubble. Most of the building's residents were at home because of Sunday driving restrictions. The gas exploded at about eleven o'clock in the morning.

One survivor was a girl, known only as Pia, who spent four hours buried under the rock and brick. She was in a critical condition.
