  • Description

SEVENTY-FIVE CUBANS FLEW INTO MIAMI INTERNATIONAL AIRPORT ON WEDNESDAY ABOARD A CHARTERED DC-7 AIRLINER. IT WAS THE FIRST FLIGHT SINCE A NEW AGREEMENT BETWEEN THE UNITED STATES AND CUBAN GOVERNMENTS UNDER WHICH CUBANS WILL BE ABLE TO LEAVE CUBA TO JOIN RELATIVES OR FRIENDS ALREADY LIVING IN THE UNITED STATES.

THE CUBANS LEAVING FOR THE UNITED STATES ARE ALLOWED TO TAKE WITH THEM ONLY THE CLOTHES THEY WEAR - OR CAN CARRY. THEIR HOUSES, BANK ACCOUNTS, AND OTHER PROPERTY HAS TO BE HANDED OVER TO THE CUBAN AUTHORITIES.

THE UNITED STATES IS ORGANISING THE AIRLIFT AND PLANS TO RUN ONE FLIGHT A DAY ALL THIS WEEK. NEXT WEEK THERE WILL BE TWO FLIGHTS EACH DAY. OFFICIALS ESTIMATE THAT ABOUT 100,000 CUBANS WILL TAKE ADVANTAGE OF THE AIRLIFT DURING THE NEXT TWO YEARS.

AS THE FOUR-ENGINED AIRLINER TOUCHED DOWN AT MIAMI, ABOUT A THOUSAND CUBANS ALREADY LIVING IN THE UNITED STATES WAVED A WELCOME FROM AIRPORT BALCONIES. PRESIDENT JOHNSON SENT A MESSAGE TO THE CUBANS WHILE THEY WERE STILL IN THE AIR. IT SAID "OUR COUNTRY GREETS YOU WITH THE SINCERE HOPE OF GIVING YOU REFUGE. THE DEDICATION OF AMERICA TO OUR TRADITION AS AN ASYLUM FOR THE OPPRESSED WILL BE UPHELD".

THIS WAS THE FIRST FLIGHT BY A COMMERCIAL AIRLINER BETWEEN THE UNITED STATES AND CUBA SINCE MID-1963.
