Holland and Holland have had a shop in the West End of London since 1835. It is popularly supposed that the traditional crafts are dying out and the few remaining craftsmen are approaching retirement age. But Holland and Holland believe craftsmen are made not born and they have been training young men in the craft of gunmaking. The average age of their craftsmen is now only 30-years-old.

Holland and Holland "Royal" shotguns are made from start to finish in their own factory -- and largely by hand. To maintain the demand for such high quality weapons the company's overriding principle is that the quality of the product must never be allowed to decline.

Holland and Holland also run a shooting school at Northwood near London, and the school is world renowned for its high standard of instruction in game shooting. Holland and Holland believe that equally important as coaching is having a gun made to a customer's exact measurements. To do that they use an adjustable "try" gun.

The company has several times shown their products abroad, visiting the United States, Egypt and Sweden. The company's managing director, Mr. Malcolm Lyell, recently returned from the United States with orders worth about a third of the company's annual production. In Egypt the Minister of Tourism was anxious to encourage sportsmen from the USA and Europe to shoot duck in Egypt and Mr. Lyell was invited to report on the subject -- and the Swedish visit resulted in plans to set up a Holland and Holland shooting school in Sweden.
