    FIELD MARSHAL SARIT, 55, DIED AT AN ARMY HOSPITAL FROM A HEART AND KIDNEY FAILURE WHICH COMPLICATED A PRE-EXISTING LIVER DISORDER.

    A SEVEN-DAY PERIOD OF NATIONAL MOURNING WAS CLAIMED AND FLAGS ARE FLYING AT HALF MAST THROUGHOUT THE COUNTRY.THE BODY IS EXPECTED TO LIE IN STATE FOR THE CUSTOMARY PERIOD OF 100 DAYS BEFORE IT IS CREMATED.

    FIELD MARSHAL SARIT, WHO SEIZED POWER IN A BLOODLESS COUP IN 1957, WAS THE 14TH PRIME MINISTER IN THE POLITICALLY TROUBLED TIMES WHICH FOLLOWED THE ABOLITION OF ABSOLUTE MONARCHY IN THAILAND IN 1932.HE WAS PROCLAIMED PRIME MINISTER IN FEBRUARY 1959 AND WAS IN OFFICE FOR FOUR YEARS AND 11 MONTHS.

    GENERAL THANOM KITTIKARCHORN, VICE-PREMIER AND DEFENCE MINISTER WAS NAMED AS THE NEW PRIME MINISTER.GENERAL THANOM, WHO RETAINED ALL MINISTERS IN THE PREVIOUS GOVERNMENT, PLEDGED TO FOLLOW THE POLICIES OF THE LATE MARSHAL SARIT.

    MEANWHILE, THAILAND, IN A STATEMENT, HAS SHARPLY CRITICISED PRINCE NORODOM SIHANOUK, THE CAMBODIAN HEAD OF STATE, FOR DECREEING "NATIONAL REJOICING" OVER THE DEATH OF FIELD MARSHAL SARIT.

    THE STATEMENT CALLED PRINCE SIHANOUK'S ACT "AN UN-PRECEDENTED PRACTICE AMONG CIVILISED NATIONS EVEN AMONG THOSE WHO ARE BITTEREST ENEMIES".

    FLYING SIDE BY SIDE WITH THE CAMBODIAN FLAG WAS THE UNITED NATION FLAG.THE UNITED NATIONS ON DECEMBER 9 CELEBRATED THE 15TH ANNIVERSARY OF THE UNIVERSAL DECLARATION OF HUMAN RIGHTS.
