Latest pictures from Surveyor's television camera show the scoop attached to its telescopic arm, as it extended for the first time. An official said it was like a furrow in a ploughed field.
Somewhere in the Mediterranean a submarine carries out the first test firing of the inter continental ballistic missile which will arm France's nuclear submarines. The missile is similar to the American and British Polaris, and the test is said to have been a complete success.
Elsewhere in the Mediterranean -- a volcanic erruption on Stromboli, the island north of Sicily. It was one of Stromboli's relatively frequent erruptions, but this one was a little worse than usual. However no casualties are reported and little damage, as the lava streamed into the sea.
