  • Description

ABOUT 3,000 SAILORS FROM THE GIANT NUCLEAR-POWERED UNITED STATES AIRCRAFT-CARRIER, "ENTERPRISE", SWARMED ASHORE ON LEAVE IN SASEBO, JAPAN, TODAY (FRIDAY) AS THREATENED LEFT-WING DEMONSTRATIONS "FIZZLED OUT". HOWEVER, SASEBO HAS BEEN THE CENTRE OF SEVERAL VIOLENT DEMONSTRATIONS SINCE THE ANNOUNCEMENT OF THE "ENTERPRISE'S" VISIT, AND THESE YESTERDAY SPREAD TO TOKYO ITSELF.

OPPOSITION POLITICAL PARTY MEMBERS AND LEFT-WING STUDENTS IN JAPAN SEE THE VISIT OF THE "ENTERPRISE" AS A FURTHER MOVE BY THE UNITED STATES TO INVOLVE JAPAN IN THE VIETNAM WAR AND INDUCE THE JAPANESE TO GIVE UP THEIR NON-NUCLEAR WAR AND INDUCE THE JAPANESE TO GIVE UP THEIR NON-NUCLEAR POLICY. IN TOKYO YESTERDAY, THE POLICE ARRESTED 108 STUDENTS WHO THREW STONES AND EMPTY MILK BOTTLES DURING A DEMONSTRATION NEAR THE CENTRAL GINZA AREA.

THE 600 RIOT POLICE HEAVILY OUTNUMBERED THE DEMONSTRATORS, ABOUT 200 OF WHOM FLED BY TRAIN, MANY WITHOUT PAUSING TO BUY TICKETS. THE JAPANESE GOVERNMENT HAS WARNED DEMONSTRATORS THAT SEVERE STEPS WOULD BE TAKEN AGAINST ANY ATTEMPTS TO DISRUPT SECURITY IN SASEBO, WHERE THE UNITED STATES HAS ITS NAVAL BASE AND THE "ENTERPRISE" IS TIED UP.

THE GOVERNMENT DENIES THAT THE "ENTERPRISE" VISIT HAS ANYTHING TO DO WITH THE INTRODUCTION OF NUCLEAR WEAPONS IN JAPAN -- THE ONLY COUNTRY IN THE WORLD WHICH HAS SUFFERED A NUCLEAR ATTACK ON ITS CITIES. THIS WAS CARRIED OUT BY THE UNITED STATES DURING THE SECOND WORLD WAR.
