  • Description

In Cambodia, government troops have begun sweeping operations along the Mekong River's eastern bank where the Vietcong have mounted frequent harassing attacks in recent weeks.

A typical operation, although away from the Mekong, is one talking place in the paddy-fields of Kompong Speu province west of Phnom Penh.

A Cambodian spokesman said the operations were keeping guerilla activity at a low level mainly because the Communists melted away each time the government forces moved into an occupied area.

However, with the monsoon period expected to end this month and thus creating less-difficult combat conditions, an upsurge in fighting is expected.

In the Kompong Speu operation, Cambodian troops ringed a house and later seized it to discover a cache or rice inside. It was taken away for distribution to refugees.
