  • Description

The 107,426-ton Norwegian tanker Elisabeth Knudsen ran aground on Friday (24 December) after a collision in the North Sea, about ten miles north of the Hook of Holland, and began losing oil. The Norwegian tanker, bound for Rotterdam, had been in collision with the Liberian tanker Theogennitor, which had just sailed into the North Sea from Rotterdam.

For Dutch tugs are trying to pull the Norwegian tanker free. Tons of oil have been pumped from the stricken tanker to a relief vessel, but some oil has leaked into the sea. A special Dutch anti-pollution ship has been spraying chemicals to try and dissolve the leaking oil.
