  • Description

INTRODUCTION: The United Nations Security Council has indefinitely adjourned its Middle East debate without adopting any resolution or making any decisions. The Council President for the month of March, Ambassador Andrew Young of the United States, said on Tuesday (29 March) that the next meeting would be fixed after another round of consultations between the members. Egypt, which initiated the debate last Friday (18 March), was hoping to end it with Council support for the participation of the Palestine Liberation Organisation at the proposed reconvention of the Geneva Middle East peace conference.

SYNOPSIS: The final argument in the debate came from the Saudi Arabian representative, Dr. Jamil Baroody.

The United States representative, Ambassador Andrew Young, closed the debate on a note of hopeful optimism. America is Israel's major Western ally - but, according to Mr. Young, would still prefer peace in the area.
