Background: KING HASSAN THE SECOND OF MOROCCO TOOK THE SALUTE YESTERDAY (FRIDAY) AT A 75-MINUTE MILITARY PARADE MARKING THE 12TH ANNIVERSARY OF HIS COUNTRY'S INDEPENDENCE. AMERICAN, BRITISH, FRENCH AND RUSSIAN WAR EQUIPMENT FEATURED IN THE PARADE.

FEATURED IN THE PARADE WERE A LARGE NUMBER OF TANKS, SELF-PROPELLED GUNS, ARMOURED CARS AND TROOP CARRIERS. THE ONLY NEW EQUIPMENT SEEN BY OBSERVERS WAS A GROUP OF BRITISH-MADE "MINI-MOKES" CARRYING BAZOOKAS AND MACHINE GUNS.

MILITARY DELEGATIONS FROM ALGERIA, BRITAIN, CZECHOSLOVAKIA, ITALY, IVORY, COAST, LIBERIA, LIBYA, SENEGAL, SPAIN, THE SOVIET UNION, TUNISIA AND THE UNITED STATES CAME TO KENITRA - A FORMER AMERICAN BASE TAKEN OVER BY MOROCCO FOUR YEARS AGO - FOR THE PARADE.

OVER 10,000 TROOPS, REPRESENTING THE ARMY, NAVY, AND AIR FORCE PARADES AS WELL AS POLICE, GENDARMERIE, AUXILIARY TROOPS AND CADETS. JET FIGHTERS, TRAINERS AND TRANSPORT AIRCRAFT FLEW OVERHEAD.

AFTER THE PARADE, FOREIGN MILITARY DELEGATIONS WERE GUESTS AT A LUNCHEON AND RECEPTION AT THE NEARBY KENITRA BASE. IT WAS THE FIRST TIME THE KENITRA BASE HAD BEEN USED FOR A LARGE OFFICIAL RECEPTION SINCE THE MOROCCANS TOOK OVER COMMAND FROM THE UNITED STATES NAVY IN 1963.

GUESTS SAW THAT THE BASE IS NOW USED FOR THE NORTHROP F-5 JET FIGHTERS MOROCCO BOUGHT IN THE UNITED STATES LAST YEAR, AND FOR THE TRAINING OF MOROCCAN ARMY TECHNICIANS BY AMERICAN MILITARY EXPERTS.

THE PLACE OF HONOUR ON THE KING'S LEFT ON THE SALUTING BASE, WENT TO M. BAHI LADGHAM, SECRETARY OF STATE AT THE TUNISIAN PRESIDENCY.
