  • Description

Unique ceremony in California........a low flying dirigible swings a sharp wedge through the air to out the ribbon opening the Santa Monica highway. This marks the midpoint of the largest construction job ever undertaken. The Interstate Highway Program which began in 1956, will connect 90 percent of our cities and carry a quarter of the nation's traffic when completed in 1972.

The highest highway in the Interstate System is Donner Pass, a record 7000 feet up over the Rocky Mountains....in Chicago, 14 lanes sets the mark for the widest roadway.....the biggest overwater stretch (20 miles) is at Lake Ponchetrain, New Orleans........Congress has authorized funds to finish the 41,000 mile system -- equivalent to pushing three concrete sidewalks to the moon and back. The opening at Santa Monica Road now signifies a midpoint in what is already the greatest road-building program in the history of the world.
