  • Description

Twenty-seven helmsmen from Britain, France, Italy and Holland met at Portland Harbour in Weymouth, England on Saturday (25 September) to try and beat the existing world sailing speed record.

SYNOPSIS: On Saturday, no one was able to beat the record of 30.09 knots. Among this year's competitors is Exoplane II of France. It's the fifth time the trials have been held in Portland Harbour. West Germany also entered a strong challenger with this yacht named Eros.

This year's trials again feature a blend of conventional high speed sailing boats and some original design concepts including multihulls, hydrofoils and wind surfers. This twin-sail yacht, Cheri Bib of France, is hoping to take away a share of the GBP 3,000 sterling prize money.

A new prize structure was introduced in 1974 and yachts can take prizes in various sections, according to sail area measurements. But heading the list this year is the 60 foot twin masted proa, Crossbow II, skippered by Tim Colman of Norwich. the first world sailing record was set by Colman in 1972 with a speed of 26.3 knots.
