Background: NINETY MILES AND HOUR WINDS, BLIZZARDS, SNOWDRIFTS AND ICE FLOES EXTENDING FIVE MILES OUT TO SEA...THAT WAS THE PICTURE TONIGHT (SATURDAY) THROUGHOUT MOST OF EUROPE AS THE BIG FREEZE AND BELOW ZERO TEMPERATURES CONTINUED.

EAST CENTRAL SWEDEN IS STILL RECOVERING FROM THE WORST BLIZZARDS IN LOCAL MEMORY.TWISTED AND BUCKLED CARS LITTER ROADSIDES AS EVIDENCE OF THE HAZARDOUS ROAD CONDITIONS.AT ONE TIME POLICE ON THE NORTH ROAD OUT OF STOCKHOLM, THE SWEDISH CAPITAL, WARNED MOTORISTS TO TURN AROUND AND HEAD FOR THE CITY CENTRE.THICKENING ICE AROUND THE SWEDISH COAST CAUSED HAVOC WITH SHIPPING AND ALL AVAILABLE ICE-BREAKERS WERE CALLED IN TO FIGHT PACK ICE IN THE GULF OF BOTHNIA.

IN BRITAIN, BLIZZARDS IN MAY PARTS OF THE COUNTRY MADE CONDITIONS WORSE THAN EVER.SNOWPLOUGHS ARE FIGHTING A LOSING BATTLE AND ROADS IN MANY COUNTIES ARE BLOCKED.THE BLIZZARDS CLOSED HARBOURS AND CANCELLED NIGHT FERRY SERVICES TO THE CONTINENT.HIGH WAVES BATTERED SEAFRONTS BRINGING SHIPPING TO A STANDSTILL.

THERE WERE SEVERE CONDITIONS TOO, ON THE NORTH YORKSHIRE MOORS WHERE THE GBP42 MILLION BALLISTIC MISSILE WARNING STATION AT FLYINGDALES IS STILL CUT OFF.EARLY TODAY SOME 250 MEN HAD BEEN STRANDED ON THE SITE MADE THEIR WAY IN SINGLE FILE ACROSS THE MOOR TO THE VILLAGE OF GOATHLAND FOUR MILES AWAY WHERE SPECIAL TRAINS WERE WAITING TO TAKE THEM HOME.ALL ROADS TO THE STATION ARE BLOCKED AND LAONG THEM ARE ABANDONED VEHICLES.FROM THE AIR THE MEN WERE SEEN STRUGGLING THROUGH DRIFTS UP TO TEN FEET DEEP.SOME WERE LUCKY ENOUGH TO GET A LIFT FROM A GOODS TRAIN BUT MANY OF THE OTHERS WHO HAD TO WALK THE FOUR MILES ARRIVED AT THE RAILWAY STATION IN AN EXHAUSTED CONDITION.AMERICA IS CONTRIBUTING 80 PERCENT OF THE COST OF FLYINGDALES AND EXPECTS TO GET FROM THE STATION 15 MINUTES WARNING OF ANY ATTACK AIMED AT ITS TERRITORY.
