  • Description

BJORN WIRKOLA OF NORWAY YESTERDAY (MONDAY) WON THE SECOND LEG OF THE 16TH GERMAN-AUSTRIAN SKI-JUMPING TOURNAMENT AT GARMISCH IN WEST GERMANY. WIRKOLA - THE OVERALL WINNER OF LAST YEAR'S TOURNAMENT - BROKE THE JUMP RECORD OF GARMISCH WITH AN EFFORT OF 92.5 METRES.

THE TOURNAMENT IS HELD AT THE SAME FOUR LOCATIONS EACH YEAR - GARMISCH AND OBERSTDORF IN WEST GERMANY AND INNSBRUCK AND BISCHOFSHOFEN IN AUSTRIA. IT IS TRADITIONALLY THE OPENING TOURNAMENT OF THE INTERNATIONAL SKI-JUMPING SEASON AND HAS PARTICULAR IMPORTANCE THIS YEAR AS THE 1968 WINTER OLYMPIC GAMES IN GRENOBLE, FRANCE, WILL BE HELD NEXT MONTH.

WIRKOLA HAD BEEN THIRD BEHIND NEUENDORF OF EAST GERMANY IN THE FIRST LEG OF THE TOURNAMENT AT OBERSTDORF ON DECEMBER 31. BUT HE HAD HIS REVENGE YESTERDAY AS NEUENDORF COULD FINISH ONLY SECOND. THIRD WAS THE SKIFLYING WORLD CHAMPION, REINHOLD BACHLER OF AUSTRIA.
