  • Description

Algeria which has become the largest liquefied natural gas exporting country in the world is the host country for this year's fourth Liquefied Natural Gas Conference.

One thousand five hundred delegates are attending the conference which opened at the Palais des Nations in Algiers on Monday (24 June). Most come from liquefied natural gas importing countries -- the United States and Canada sent 400 delegates.

Liquefied natural gas is a by-product of oil and one of the most important sources of carbon fuel in the world.

The first liquefaction plant operating on an industrial scale opened at Arzew in western Algeria in 1964.

The delegates will discuss the technical problems of producing liquefied natural gas rather than the political issues involved. Algerian Minister of Industry and Energy Belaid Abdessalam addressed the delegates on the opening morning.
