  • Description

Hong Kong's Chinese population go out of their way to please ghosts ... particularly those of their departed relatives. Their philosophy is a "peaceful ghost is a happy ghost."
To make sure they stay happy, thousands of people in Hong Kong annually offer the necessities of life of the dead during the Ghost Festival which was filmed on Monday (25 August).
The festival goes along with their belief that the people who led good lives will eventually return to earth as someone .. of something else. When they come back they should be well-equipped.
So the living relatives make offering to the ghosts. These are paper houses, clothes, cars, television sets and money. Those too poor to lavish upon the dead such luxuries are provided with free rice supplies by volunteer organisations.
At night the paper goods and money are set in fire and sent heavenwards.
There is only one drawback to the festival, as all Chinese in Hong Kong would agree. If the relatives led bad lives then the offerings are in vain ... because according to Chinese beliefs, they will return to earth as any thing from a dog to a snake.
