The former Prime Minister of India, Mrs. Indira Gandhi arrived in New Delhi from Britain?

  • Description

The former Prime Minister of India, Mrs. Indira Gandhi arrived in New Delhi from Britain on Monday (20 November). She also was sworn in as Member of Parliament for Chikmagalur, and attended a parliamentary session for the first time since she lost the 1977 election.

SYNOPSIS: Mrs. Gandhi received a noisy welcome at the airport in New Delhi -- a contrast to her mixed reception in Britain a week earlier. Her appearances throughout Britain were marked with demonstrations and egg pelting. In New Delhi, she received garlands and flowers.

Mrs. Gandhi had been out of the country for the first time since she was swept from power last year after twenty-one months of emergency rule. She had to return after a week to face charges of electoral malpractice.

Mrs. Gandhi was to go from the airport to Parliament House. But first, she went tot he Speaker's chamber, where the Chikmagalur returning officer declared her duly elected to parliament. And then she went on to the House to take the oath of allegiance before a gallery packed with her supporters.

Inside the house, she received boos and insults from ruling Janata party members. A day later, Mrs. Gandhi faced possible imprisonment or expulsion from Parliament after it held her guilty of blocking an official inquiry into a car company controlled by her youngest son, Sanjay. She was found guilty of breach of privilege and contempt of parliament. Mrs. Gandhi was not in the House when the committee report was presented.
