  • Description

In London a new museum was opened by Britain's Queen Elizabeth the Second on Thursday (2 December) in the historic city area, heart of Britain's capital. The new Museum of London tells the story of the capital and its people from pre-historic times through to the present day.

SYNOPSIS: Before declaring the new building open, the Queen was introduced to the leading people behind the project. She then spoke of London's ancient past.

QUEEN ELIZABETH: "Few cities can have a longer, more dramatic or more varied past than this one. And I think it is an excellent thing that its history and that of the river on which it is built is now presented in one building. Here visitors will be able to see displayed the whole panorama of London's past. Its greatness, its disasters, and how over more than 2,000 years from the days of the temple of Mithra to our own times its people lived and made their money."
Among the exhibits the Queen saw was her own coronation gown which she lent to the museum for a special display of past coronations on show throughout next year. The new museum brings together the former Guildhall and London museums in a specially designed building.
