  • Description

PRESIDENT KAMUZU BANDA OF MALAWI SAID ON HIS RETURN HOME ON MONDAY THAT THE COMMONWEALTH CONFERENCE HE ATTENDED IN LONDON HAD NOT "DEVELOPED INTO A SHAMBLES" OVER THE RHODESIA ISSUE. HE SAID THE COMMONWEALTH WAS THE SAME OLD FAMILY, EVEN IF THERE HAD BEEN QUARRELS.

A LARGE CROWD WELCOMED THE PRESIDENT WHEN HE ARRIVED AT CHILEKA AIRPORT. DANCERS PERFORMED A WELCOME DANCE AS HIS PLANE ARRIVED AND HE GREETED HIS MINISTERS AND OTHER OFFICIALS. PRESIDENT BANDA BLAMED THE BRITISH PRESS FOR CREATING THE IMPRESSION THAT THE COMMONWEALTH MIGHT SPLIT OVER THE RHODESIA ISSUE.

PRESIDENT BANDA CRITICISED LEADERS AT THE LONDON CONFERENCE WHO, HE SAID, "LEAKED" THEIR VIEWS AND STATEMENT TO THE PRESS FOR WHAT HE CALLED SELF ADVERTISEMENT AND CHEAP POPULARITY.

HE USED HIS REFERENCE TO "QUARRELLING" WHEN HE DISCUSSED MALAWI'S OWN FUTURE. HE SAID THE PEOPLE MUST REMEMBER THEY MUST DEVELOP THEIR COUNTRY AND TO DO THAT THEY MUST HAVE PEACE AND CALM, NOT QUARRELLING. ANYONE TRYING TO START A QUARREL AND CONFUSE THE ISSUE MUST BE REPORTED TO THE RULING MALAWI CONGRESS PARTY LEADERS.
