    Israeli artillery opened fire on the Southern Lebanese village of Aita Al-Shaab on Saturday (28 September). A Lebanese and his wife were killed and several other people were reported wounded.

    Shortly before this incident one Israeli soldier was injured and an arab guerrilla killed when an Israeli patrol unit was ambushed.

    Israeli shelling or bombing of border areas has been reported frequently in recent weeks. On Friday (27 September) there was artillery fire on the outskirts of several villages, but damage was said to have been confined plantations.

    A Lebanese Defence Ministry statement said that an Israeli force of about 150 soldiers infiltrated to the outskirts of Aita Al-Shaab, the scene of Saturday's shelling on 6 September. Residents said the Israelis broke into several houses, claiming that they were searching for Palestinian commandos.

    Israeli shelling or bombing of Southern Lebanese border areas has been reported frequently in recent weeks. On Friday there was artillery fire on the out-skirts of several villages, but damage was confined to plantations. The rocky mountain region is know as "Fatahland" and Israel claim that it contains large concentrations of Arab guerrillas.

    Aita Al-Shaab was searched by Israeli troops earlier this month. Residents said they broke into several houses claiming they were looking Palestinian commandos. On that occasion there was no violence, but during Saturday's shelling a Lebanese villager and his wife were killed and several others have been reported wounded.

    The loss of a relative still causes distress, despite the years of fighting in this area.
