  • Description

THE PREDOMINANTLY BUDDHIST NATION OF LAOS HAS ALWAYS MARKED BUDDHA'S BIRTHDAY WITH THE FIRING OF HOME-MADE ROCKETS. THIS YEAR IT WAS NO EXCEPTION...ON TUESDAY (MAY 23), THE PEOPLE WERE IN HOLIDAY MOOD AS THEY TOOK THE ROCKETS OUT ON A PROCESSION WHICH WOUND THROUGH THE MAIN STREETS OF VIENTIANE, ITS CAPITAL.

THE FIRING OF ROCKETS SIGNIFY FERTILITY AND TO ENSURE A BOUNTIFUL SEASON WITH PLENTY OF RAIN FOR THE CROPS.

THE PURPOSE OF THE PROCESSION WAS FOR EVERYONE TO SEE THE BEAUTIFULLY-DECORATED ROCKETS. THE PROCESSION ENDED ON THE BANKS OF THE MEKONG RIVER WHERE THE ROCKETS WERE CARRIED ONTO LAUNCHING PADS -- MADE OF WOODEN POLES.

AT THE SIDE OF THE LAUNCHING, MORE PEOPLE IN FANCIFUL COSTUMES DANCED ABOUT THE PLACE.

BEFORE EACH FUSE WAS LIT, THE LARGE GATHERING OF BUDDHISTS GAMBLED ON WHETHER OF NOT IT WOULD GO OFF. MUCH BLACK SMOKE BILLOWED BEFORE THE ROCKETS EVENTUALLY EXPLODED AND LEFT THE PADS.
