Background: Scottish World Champion Jackie Stewart won pole position for the 1970 Monaco Grand Prix which begins in Monte Carlo today (Sunday ). Battling rain showers, stewart covered the track in one minute 24 seconds.
The star studded field for the classic includes Australia's Jack Brabham, Belgium's Jacky Ickx, Frenchman jean-Pierre Beltoise, Britain's John Surtees, Mexican Pedro Rodriguez, N. Zealander's Chris Amon and Denis Hulme and last year's winner Graham Hill.
However Hill is in doubt following a crash during practice. His lotus swerved into a barrier and was badly damaged. If spare parts can be found in time his car will start in the race.
Local experts favour the well tried Brabham of Australian Jack Brabham, winner of the South African Grand prix, or Britain's Graham Hill.....if he starts.
