  • Description

THE TOURING AUSTRALIAN CRICKET TEAM OPENED THEIR SERIES OF MATCHES AGAINST BRITISH COUNTY TEAMS AT WORCESTER TODAY (WEDNESDAY). THEY WERE PLAYING THE WORCESTERSHIRE ELEVEN. AT THE CLOSE OF PLAY ON THE FIRST DAY AUSTRALIA WERE ALL OUT IN THEIR FIRST INNINGS FOR TWO HUNDRED AND FIFTY ONE RUNS. IN REPLY THE COUNTY ELEVEN HAD LOST ONE WICKET FOR NINE RUNS.

PLAY OPENED THIS MORNING WITH A HESITANT START BY THE TOURISTS. THE WORCESTERSHIRE BOWLERS MADE FULL USE OF THE NEW BALL AND DISMISSED SIMPSON AND O'NEILL FOR ONLY FIFTEEN RUNS. HOWEVER A THIRD WICKET STAND BY BURGE (58) AND LAWRY (50) SAVED THE SITUATION FOR THE AUSTRALIANS. THE HIGHLIGHT OF THE AUSTRALIAN INNINGS WAS A SCORE OF SIXTY-EIGHT MADE BY COWPER.

THE WORCESTERSHIRE ATTACK WAS LED BY LEN COLDWELL WHO, IN A DRAMATIC RETURN TO COUNTY CRICKET, TOOK SEVEN OF THE TOURIST'S WICKETS INCLUDING THOSE OF COWPER, O'NEILL AND BURGE, FOR ONLY FIFTY-THREE RUNS.

THE AUSTRALIAN INNINGS ENDED WITH THE WORCESTERSHIRE PLAYER RICHARDSON AT SHORT-LEG TAKING A GOOD CATCH CLOSE IN TO DISMISS MCKENZIE FOR EIGHT OFF THE BOWLING AGAIN OF COLDWELL.
