Background: AFTER MAKING TWO FURTHER SPEED RUNS AT LAKE EYRE IN THE FAR-NORTH OF SOUTH AUSTRALIA, ON MAY 14, DONALD CAMPBELL DECIDED TO MAKE HIS ATTEMPT ON THE LAND SPEED RECORD IN ABOUT A FORTNIGHT.

HE HAS REACHED A MAXIMUM SPEED OF JUST UNDER THREE HUNDRED MILES AN HOUR -- THE HIGHEST SPEED SO FAR REACHED BY THE BLUEBIRD.

CAMPBELL IS NOW USING A NEW TRACK WHICH RUNS AT RIGHT ANGLES TOT HE ORIGINAL STRIP. IT HAS BEEN EXTENDED NORTH AND SOUGH OF THE ORIGINAL STRIP TO A LENGTH OF ABOUT SIXTEEN MILES. IT WAS ONLY SLIGHTLY DAMAGED BY THE TWO RUNS.

THE THREE HUNDRED MILES AN HOUR BY THE BLUEBIRD WAS THE FASTEST EVER OR AUSTRALIAN SOIL.
