  • Description

THE NANTERRE SUBURBAN FACULTY OF ARTS IN PARIS WAS CALM TODAY (WEDNESDAY) AFTER YESTERDAY'S STRIKES WHICH CULMINATED A WEEK OF INCIDENTS. ABOUT 2,000 STUDENTS YESTERDAY DECLARED AN UNLIMITED STRIKE IN PROTEST AGAINST ALLEGED VIOLENCE BY FACULTY OFFICERS DURING CLASHES LAST FRIDAY. TODAY, JUNIOR TEACHERS AT THE FACULTY VOTED IN SUPPORT OF DEMANDS WHICH INCLUDED THE SACKING OF SOME FACULTY OFFICERS FOR THEIR PART IN THE INCIDENTS.

TODAY'S BALLOT DREW ONLY 42 VOTERS -- ONLY A LITTLE MORE THAN HALF THE 75 ELIGIBLE TO VOTE.

THE DEMANDS INCLUDED THE DROPPING OF LEGAL CHARGES AGAINST STUDENTS INVOLVED IN EARLIER UNREST AND THE RELEASE OF STUDENTS AT PRESENT IN JAIL ON SIMILAR CHARGES.

THE VOTING WAS 18 IN FAVOUR OF THE DEMANDS, WITH ONE AGAINST. THERE WERE 23 ABSTENTIONS.

THE REMAINING 33 VOTERS ARE BELIEVED TO HAVE DECLINED TO TAKE PART IN THE VOTE IN PROTEST AGAINST ANTI-STUDENT VIOLENCE IN GENERAL, AND INSUFFICIENT STUDENT REPRESENTATION.

NANTERRE WAS THE CENTRE OF LAST YEAR'S WAVE OF RIOTING THAT LAUNCHED THE STUDENT REVOLT. IT'S 15,000 STUDENTS HAVE TAKEN A LEADING PART IN STUDENT ACTION. BUT A GREAT MAJORITY OF THEM HAVE RECENTLY SHOWN THEIR UNWILLINGNESS TO FOLLOW MILITANT LEADERS.
