  • Description

Jethou - a tiny islet in the Channel Islands is on the market. And if you want to get any from it all, this is the place to come. It's three miles from Guernsey, twenty minutes by the boat - which, apart from a radio -telephone link, is the only contact with the outside world. Jethou is tiny - only 45 acres of daffodils, woods, beaches, rocks and wild flowers.

The main building is the menor house. Part of this dates back to the 16th century. Only 21 families have lived here in 900 years and only three since the last war.

Apart from this, the only other buildings on Jethou are a bungalow and cafe on the foreshore, a bar and a tiny jail.

The present tenant of Jethou is Group-Captain William Hedley Cliff and his family. One of the previous tenants was Sir Campton Mackenzle, the author. The Library and its record collection are a league the McKenzie are. Group Captain Cliff came on the Island four years ago. He says he loves the place, and is only leaving for personal reasons. In fact, most of the tenants hate to go Sir Compton MacKenzie said in 1958 that if he was younger he'd buy it again.

Group Captain Cliff has done a lot in his tenancy he repaired the house, brought in a tractor, installed the radio telephone, issued Jethou's first stamps and encouraged tourists -six thousand came last year.

So from today Jethou is for a sole - an ancient manor, a 200 year old Mulberry tree and a beautiful island. To get it, on a 32 year lease you'll need to find about twenty thousand pounds. Competition will be fierce - last time, there were two hundred applicants. But its hardly surprising for such a place, is it?
